Most audio files you download from the internet these days are generally in MP3 format. In order to reduce the size of these audio files, they have to be compressed, and that's where they lose the lossless tag. A high bitrate means more data, which in turn means high file sizes.
Ideally, this is the bitrate and sample rate required to hear "lossless" audio. High-quality WAV files generally have a bitrate of 1,411kbps and a sample rate of 44.1KHz. When we "rip" CD files to a computer, we often convert these audio streams to WAV or AIF, as both codecs support the same bitrate and sample rate of a CD. CDs, or Compact Discs, typically use an audio format built specifically for CD players and do not have a direct-to-PC equivalent.
